The Murrumbeena Boyds; Family & Friends
The art community that formed around the extended Boyd family in Murrumbeena put this small Melbourne suburb on the map. In art circles, it made Murrumbeena a household name. Whilst Arthur Boyd is the best known of this group, many others contributed to it and produced important art.
These websites feature the lives and art of some of these artists.
They are;
Merric Boyd, who, in addition to his pottery, produced remarkable and highly expressive drawings in the latter part of his life.
Doris Boyd, whose art interests were diverse and included the writing of poetry, ceramic decoration and painting in both oil paint and watercolours.
Lucy Boyd Beck, who in conjunction with her husband Hatton Beck, mastered the art of ceramic painting in an expressive and highly personalised manner.
Hatton Beck, who was a ceramicist of extraordinary ability and produced a diverse range of pottery as well as ceramic landscape paintings.
Friedl Gardner, who was a patient and skilled artist and produced unique artworks that combined collage and watercolours.
Jean Langley, was both a gifted writer & artist, and produced a wide body of art including landscape painting, the painting of Australian wildflowers and drawings.
