In his long career in ceramics, Merric Boyd marked the bases of his pottery in a variety of ways. Most was signed 'M. Boyd' or 'Merric Boyd' and usually dated. In the early 1920s, he signed his pottery by drawing a gumleaf followed by the letter 'B'. These were usually dated. When he and Doris worked the Australian Porcelain Insulator Company in Yarraville in 1934, his pottery either had a sticker on the base that stated 'Art Cruffel Porcelain Melbourne' or was inscribed 'Merric Boyd Cruffel Porcelain', and dated. Much of the pottery made by Merric and decorated by Doris only is inscribed by his name. Some pots do however include her name and are inscribed often as 'Merric Boyd Coloured by Doris Boyd' and dated.
